BlackBerry Storm

September 12th, 2008

The new RIM Blackberry Thunder (also wrongly known as the Storm) is being touted as the iPhone killer, the arch rival of the new iPhone 3G.

The Thunder will be the first device by Blackberry which doesn’t have a

keyboard. It will be a slate design like some other handhelds such as the

PDA and the iPhone. It will also feature haptic feedback (a vibration of

the screen and a noise) which enables it to imitate QWERTY or

SureType keyboards depending on whether the device is being used

vertically or horizontally. The device will also have four buttons below the main screen: call, disconnect, return to menu and back buttons.

The screen will probably be about the same size as the iPhone’s display,

which is around 3.5 inches, 360×480 pixels, and 65,000 colours, but will be

more curved around its edges. It is interesting to note that this is a little

larger than the iPhone’s screen – something that will probably help the

Thunder in its quest to be one step ahead of its competition. However,

according to several people who have had a play around with the Thunder,

the screen is not brilliant, as it is practically one large button and must be pressed fairly hard to register the clicks.

There is little news yet regarding the Thunder’s specifications, but it will

undoubtedly support high speed internet connectivity and will operate on

both HSPA and EV-DO networks. It is also expected that the device will

support 4G connectivity as well. Other features are likely to include

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a 2MP camera with a flash and a 3x zoom 1GB memory (expandable to 16GB) and GPS.

The Thunder will most likely be released exclusively on the Vodaphone

and Verizon networks – Verizon in the US and Vodaphone in the UK -

with OS 4.7.0 as its operating system. Reports are emerging that the

Verizon release of this device will be priced at $199 in-contract. The life

long exclusivity of the contract is one of the most appealing things about

this device. The Blackberry is a stunning phone to look at, but I think that

its war with the iPhone 3G will be won or lost on functionality rather than looks.

The expected release date for the Blackberry Thunder is October 2008 in the US. Check out my homepage at www.cheap-electronic-deals.com

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

September 5th, 2008
indiana-jones-and-the-kingdom-of-the-crystal-skull-poster-11.jpg
This fourth (and final?) installment in the Indiana Jones saga has
a lot to live up to. But Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) although
now peculiarly older (see the ending to The Last Crusade) and
greyer, still has what it takes to crack the whip and foil the foes.

The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull begins in the southwestern desert
of 1957 at the height of the cold war. We’re thrown straight in at
the deep end, because as normal, the action kicks off from the word
go. Indy uncovers a Russian plot to raid an area 51 type air force
base containing an alien corpse, and then narrowly escapes a nuclear
explosion, which results in him breaking into a nearby house for
help. What follows is a piece of classic Spielberg genius. He is
dismayed to find that instead of people, the house is full of creepy
mannequins which were put there to test the effects of a nuclear
explosion on humans. Shocked by this bizarre discovery, he
frantically scrambles looking for a shelter from the blast and then
bumps into lead baddie Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett). Irina is a
tallish, icy, banged and rather attractive ruskie. Indy then makes a
narrow escape and heads off home.

Upon returning home to Marshall College Indy discovers that he has
just come out of the frying pan and into the fire. His friend and
dean of the college (Jim Broadbent) informs him that his recent
escapades have made the government suspicious of him and they have
put pressure on the university to fire him. On his way out of town
Indy meets a young tearaway called Mutt (Shia LaBeouf) who proposes
that if Indy helps him in a mission with deep personal stakes, he
will aid Indy in his search for the legendary crystal skull of
Akator, an object of mystery, superstition and fear. The two become
partners and set off for Peru. But they soon realise that they are
not alone in their quest, the ruthless Soviets are also plotting to
get their grubby hands on the crystal skull and return it to its
resting place in the heart of the Amazon jungle. This would give the
USSR the power to rule over the entire globe.

It contains all the obligatory aspects of an Indiana Jones movie,
such as the car chase, the one liners, the baddies from a rogue
regime and ancient relic that would enable them to rule the world.
CGI played a big role in this movie, but that is nothing new to the
genre and high end special effects had a big part in the three
previous Indiana Jones outings. Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen)
reprises her heavy-drinking role from the first film, although
fortunately she has sobered up somewhat since we last saw her. This
is an engaging and very enjoyable movie, which will appeal to action
film fans and, well, pretty much everyone. Do yourself a favour and
check it out.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be released
on DVD on November 10th 2008.

Wii MotionPlus

August 29th, 2008
 pic-of-motionplus.bmp

Nintendo caused major waves recently by unveiling the new
controller known as the “MotionPlus”. This new piece of hardware
was revealed at the start of the E3, the day before its planned
press conference. They had kept the MotionPlus a secret from
everyone for as long as possible, resulting in some irritation to
numerous companies, for instance Lucasarts. It would have been
much easier for LucasArts to develop their latest lightsaber game
has they known about the MotionPlus.

The MotionPlus is a gadget the size of a memory card which fixes
onto the Wiimote providing what Nintendo calls “more comprehensive
tracking of a player’s arm position and orientation.” This
basically means that it provides a spot-on representation of your
arms position resulting in exact 1:1 motion.

This new add on will probably be very useful for games in which
accurate movement is called, for, like Zelda; but it may not be so
vital for games where it is easily possible to achieve your
desired results with comparatively sloppy movements, such as Wii
Fit.

It remains to be seen how much this little add on will cost –
although Nintendo have said that it will be inexpensive – or how
big an effect it will have on the experience of the Wii gamer. The
MotionPlus will most likely be released bundled with a game titled
Wii Sports Resort, as well as being sold individually.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

August 22nd, 2008

 pic-of-star-wars-unleashed-for-website.bmp

This is the latest addition to one of the greatest sagas ever, Star
Wars. The early games in this franchise – such as those on the
SNES - tended to be good enough to be worthy of the Star Wars
name, they then took a nosedive in quality, but this may well be
the best Star Wars game ever.

The player takes on the role of the secret apprentice to the mighty
Darth Vader, unveiling new revelations about the Star Wars
Galaxy. The vast plot which was constructed under the guidance
and instruction of George Lucas, is set during the unknown period
between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star
Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.

The aim for the player is to assist the heavy-breathing one in his
quest to purge the universe of Jedi. This puts the player on the war
path with the Rebel Alliance and the Imperial Troopers, as well as
any other Jedi who have gone into hiding.

There are many large rooms and interconnecting corridors which are
explored during the course of the game. The game also involves
much picking things up (using the “Force Grip”) and throwing them,
such as explosive barrels and even enemy soldiers. The controls are
simple enough; the left stick controls the character and the right
stick controls the camera, much like the majority of third-person
action games. The player can execute a delightful variety of attack
moves and combinations with the light saber, making it a very
effective weapon. There are also a myriad of other lethal moves and
ways of attacking the ubiquitous enemies.

The game will be fundamentally the same on all consoles, except for
the Wii, which will allow you to use the motion sensing remote
controller to swing your light saber for added realism.

The game is highly impressive and very smooth in both graphics and
gameplay. The environments are highly detailed and interactive, and
the characters are especially great – due to their fantastic animation
and expressiveness. These things all combine to give the player an
exciting and varied experience.

The Force Unleashed is practically finished and will go on sale in
September 16th in the US, September 17th in Asia and September
19th in Europe.

Nokia 3610 Fold

August 15th, 2008

 pics-of-nokia-3610-fold.bmp
Now that other manufacturers are moving onto the candy bar style
designs, clamshell phones are getting rarer, so the new Nokia 3610
Fold is a welcome addition to the mobile phone market.

There is nothing revolutionary about this new offering from Nokia
in terms of its design or features; in fact it is not at all
dissimilar to the 6131.

This phone is not targeted at the geek or yuppie markets due to its
lack of gadgets which can be found on the high-end devices. The
3610 is aimed at users who want a phone which is stylish and
uncomplicated.

The 3610 Fold has a 2 inch QVGA 240×320 pixel 262,000 colour
screen, and a 1.3 megapixel camera with auto-focus and multimedia
player.

There is also USB connectivity for transferring music and pictures.
A useful feature of the 3610 Fold is the 2.5mm audio jack socket
which was not found on the 6131, although the 3610 Fold lacks the
FM radio which is present on the 6131.

It also comes with GPRS and edge data, and 30 MB of internal memory
and a microSD card slot which can take up to 4 GB.

The phone may be considered a little on the large size with a
weight of 97 grams and dimensions of 100 X 44 X 20 mm.

It will be available in four colours, red, green, blue and rose
depending on the network.

At around £100 for a sim free model the 3610 Fold is about the same price as the 6300.
